Mexico offers you much more than stunning beaches. The ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum are fabulous places to explore. Using a guide is really beneficial as it brings the visit to life. Our first visit was to Chichen Itza, built by the Mayans, it has 365 steps, one for each day of the year and is totally awe inspiring. I cannot explain how standing at the bottom of the pyramid sends shivers down your spine. When you clap your hands the sound of an eagle reverberates out of the top of the pyramid. I could go on for hours about the stories we were told of the Mayans and Gee still remembers the facts like it was only yesterday.
After the heat of Chichen Itza what better way to cool down than in an underground Cenote (meaning sacred well). These beautiful natural swimming holes are the perfect place to admire the roots of the trees up above, feeding off the cool water. We also took a refreshing bathe in the soothing water after being in the humid heat, it was really cold when you entered but definitely an experience not to miss.
We also enjoyed a visit to the third largest city in the Yucatan Peninsula. Valladolid is a quaint colonial city and features stunning churches and colourful houses. The highlight for Gee was finding and old man on a bicycle cart in the square, who made his own ice cream, this was the best ice cream we have ever tasted.
Exploring the stunningly beautiful white sand beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula you come across many natural beauties, coconut shells that have been washed up by the tide, plant life growing out of nowhere and lizards basking in the sunshine which scuttle away when you pass, to seek shelter from intruders of their domain.
A holiday is about making memories, memories that you carry with you for the rest of your life. Learn about the new environments and enjoy your adventure where ever it takes you, whether it be at home or abroad, there are so many opportunities out there to experience.
We will certainly remember our adventure in Mexico but before I go, I must tell you we even swam with dolphins. These dolphins were extremely well cared for in their own environment and given free access to the ocean everyday. I must admit they brought a tear to my eye, they are such beautiful and intelligent mammals.
So what is next on our wishlist? We would love to explore the Outback in Australia or sail down the Amazon, Cambodia sounds good and would not have appeared on my wishlist if I hadn't entered this competition. It is good to do something different that takes you out of your comfort zone, something you will probably only get chance of doing once in a lifetime. This is my entry in to the Trips100/Family Adventure Company blogger challenge.
