For busy mums like us, a night off is both a luxury and a necessity. It’s important to remember to take some time for yourself to recharge, if only to be able to face the next day! But with so many prior commitments, after-school activities and piano recitals, a night off is certainly a rare treat.
Occasionally, I like to just sit at home with a glass of wine and a good book, but other times, I like to get the girls together and go out. Sometimes we all see a film together, or have a nice meal, or meet for a few drinks. And while everyone is entitled to a little break, here are some ideas to help you get yours!
The Babysitter: Your Trusted Accomplice
To make your night out a success, start planning early by arranging with a babysitter to come and watch the kids. Choose an acquaintance whom you trust and can be counted on to provide careful attention to your children. You can even take some time to ask your friends for recommendations.
Once you’ve found the right candidate, make sure to explain to your children that there will be someone different taking care of them and that they should respect that person just as they would you or any other adult. You should also help the sitter understand your children’s temperament and what kinds of activities they like so everyone can have a fun evening. Additionally, you should leave out any emergency numbers and show the sitter where you keep first aid supplies. Last of all, give the sitter your number before you leave and keep your phone on so he/she can reach you in case of emergencies.
Plan with Your Friends
Make sure you plan your evening escape well in advance. Talk with your friends several days beforehand so they have time to clear their schedules (because they’re probably busy too). You can also use the time in advance to make a reservation at a favorite restaurant or buy tickets to see a show.
Dress for the Part
Since you will be out to have fun, you can dress like you’re out to have fun. Ditch the sensible shoes for sky-high heels, and don’t even think of leaving the house in Mom jeans! Instead, try a crop top and mini-skirt combo, or your favorite skinny jeans with a blouse. You should dress in a way that makes you feel beautiful and free on your night off.
Girls’ Night Ideas
There are countless ways to spend your night off. You could go see a play, go to a gallery opening, catch the latest movie, or meet your friends at the hottest wine bar for a night of wine-tasting. Or, go to your favourite restaurant for a nice meal and a chance to dish. Whatever you decide to do, a night-off definitely give you the strength and energy to keep things running smoothly at home.
